The team in a huddle during the Missouri State game

Oles go 0-4 in Missouri

It was a tough weekend for the Oles. The success of the hockey team who advanced to the MIAC championship meant bad news for the lacrosse team. Sophomore attackmen Matt Job and Nick Vespasiano, Freshman Midfielder Gunnar Olson, and Freshman Defenseman Reid Welsh all were not able to make the trip, leaving a short bench to start the weekend.

Friday night the team matched up with Washington University - St. Louis (#25 in the polls). Despite only being down by a goal at half time, the Bears exploded in the 3rd quarter and went on a 7-1 run, eventually winning the game 17-7. Senior Captains Matt Williams and Ben Mayo each had two goals, while Mason Hinke '15, Reid Johnson '14 and Ian Burrell '14 added one a piece.

Saturday morning was the best game for the Oles, who lost to Missouri State (#23) by one goal in the final minutes of play. Midfielder Ben Mayo '12 led the Oles with 7 goals and 1 assist, while winning 20 of 25 faceoffs. Sophomore midfielder Ian Burrell led the team wih 13 ground balls, and tallying a career high 4 goals.

After a few hours of rest in the hotel, the team had to get righ back at it with a game versus the Missouri Baptist Spartans (#16). To make matters worse, early in the game Ian Burrell went down with a knee injury, as well as Freshman midfielder Alex Kalyniuk, shortening the bench even further. Despite the fatigue and short bench, the team fought hard, eventually losing 16-7. Ben Mayo led the team with 4 goals, while Reid Johnson added 2 of his own.

Sunday afternoon was a different story. Playing the only unranked team of the weekend, the Oles were entirely out of gas and could not put anything together. The Aquinas Saints were clicking, winning 28-10. Ben Mayo and Matt Williams each tallied 3 goals and 1 assits for the Oles. Mason Hinke and Nathan Cox added goals as well.

The Oles are off the next few weeks before heading to Chicago to play a packed schedule of 4 games in just over 24 hours. The team takes on Wheaton College, Judson University, and Calvin College on Saturday, then Western Michigan on Sunday.
